How we detect solar panels

Our detections underpin the solar monitor. We combine current aerial imagery with AI and manual review so you reliably know per building whether panels are present and where potential remains.

Annual aerial imagery of the Netherlands forms the basis. We identify roofs and solar panels on top.

AI + manual review

Automated detection with AI, supplemented by manual review, for reliable figures at building and area level.

Together with partners, a realistic solar-potential forecast was built for the Dutch municipality of Groningen towards 2035 — roofs, heat pumps, electric driving and policy choices in one picture. Provinces and RES regions use Solar Insight Pro and annual detections to monitor installed capacity and remaining potential across a larger area. Alphen aan den Rijn uses detections as a structural monitoring instrument.

Yes. Solar Insight delivers figures and maps on installed capacity, potential and progress per area. You can use this for RES monitoring, regional energy strategies and reporting to national or provincial authorities.

Potential maps are updated periodically based on current roof information (BAG, aerial imagery). We update installed capacity and realisation with data from grid operators and (where available) subsidy and permit registers.

Yes. We offer API access and export to common formats. Integrations with GIS, energy management and municipal or regional portals are possible.
