Why local heat sources are crucial

Sustainable heat sources are key to a successful heat transition. The heat transition requires insight into local sources: aquathermy, geothermal and waste heat. One overview supports policy and heat network development.

How Heat Insight works

Policy officers and advisers view heat sources, heat demand and connection options per area. Select a neighbourhood or building and see the options for gas-free heat directly.

Combine heat demand and sources

View heat demand, heat sources, networks and scenarios per neighbourhood. Heat insight supports heat-transition plans and conversations with residents and partners.

Heat transition: from gas to local sources

The heat transition is complex and capital-intensive. Municipalities are looking for ways to sustainably heat homes and businesses with local sources such as surface water, ground heat and waste heat.

Complex transition

Making the heat supply sustainable requires system changes in neighbourhoods and districts.

Local sources

The Netherlands has enormous potential for local heat sources that are not yet fully utilised.

Economic feasibility

Municipalities struggle to find the right business case for heat transition projects.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about Heat Insight.

Which heat sources are included in Heat Insight?
We map aquathermy (surface water, wastewater), waste heat, geothermal and other sustainable sources. You see where potential lies, how sources relate to heat demand and where heat networks are promising.
Does Heat Insight align with the heat transition vision (HTV)?
Yes. The maps and data support drafting and updating HTVs: which neighbourhoods to take off gas, which sources and networks are realistic, and how to monitor progress. Export to your own reporting or GIS is possible.
What about permits for aquathermy or other sources?
Heat Insight supports mapping permits and frameworks (Water Act, Environment and Planning Act, provincial rules). For actually going through permit procedures we work with authorities and advisers where needed.
Can the data be linked to our existing systems?
Yes. API and export to common formats are available. Connections with heat network management, GIS and municipal or regional energy strategy portals are possible.
