What are GIS applications?

GIS applications are concrete software solutions that provide geodata and map functionality for specific tasks and audiences. They are the visible end product users work with, unlike generic platforms or raw data files.

Examples in the GeoApps ecosystem: a Viewer for interactive map display and search, a Dashboard for KPIs and charts on the map, Fieldwork for field entry and inspections on tablet or phone, and participation apps for public input and reports. Each application targets a workflow: view, analyze, capture, or report.

Applications are not the same as the underlying GIS platform or raw geodata. The platform provides infrastructure (users, layers, services); the application presents that for one use case. Organizations often combine multiple applications on the same PDOK, BAG, and internal layers.
