API
An API (Application Programming Interface) is a standardized way for software applications to communicate. In GIS, an API lets other applications retrieve, filter, visualize, or update geodata without direct access to the underlying database or map layer.
GIS APIs connect map layers to dashboards, mobile field apps, or business systems. Examples include querying BAG addresses via the PDOK Location Server, loading WFS features into a web viewer, or publishing your own layers from GeoApps to external systems.
An API is not a user interface: end users do not see it, but they benefit from the integrations it enables. REST APIs and OGC web services (WMS, WFS) are common forms in Dutch geo practice.
