QGIS is free open-source desktop GIS for Windows, macOS, and Linux. You open shapefiles, GeoPackage, WMS/WFS, PostGIS, and raster; style maps; run analyses; and prepare data for publication to GeoApps or GeoServer.

In the Netherlands QGIS is popular with municipalities, consultancies, and provinces alongside commercial packages. It reads PDOK and Kadaster services directly; plugins support BGT, 3D, and processing. QField (mobile) shares projects for fieldwork linking to GeoApps Fieldwork.

QGIS is not a web viewer (GeoApps) or an ETL server (FME). Desktop is where you do heavy editing and local analysis; GeoApps shares results with colleagues and citizens via the browser.
