GeoServer
GeoServer is open-source server software to publish geodata as OGC web services: WMS (map images), WFS (editable features), WMTS (tiles), and WCS (raster download). It is the standard choice for organizations offering their own layers securely and at scale.
GeoServer reads from PostGIS, shapefiles, GeoPackage, and raster sources. You style layers, configure security, and connect to GeoApps via WMS/WFS URLs, combining internal data with PDOK and Kadaster in one viewer.
GeoServer is not desktop GIS (QGIS) or a SaaS viewer (GeoApps). It is middleware: data in, standard services out. ArcGIS Server and MapServer play similar roles in other stacks.
For static tiles alone a tile server may suffice; for editable WFS and complex styling GeoServer remains central in open-source GIS architectures.
