What is asset management?

Asset management in GIS is managing physical and infrastructure objects with a known location: roads, pipelines, buildings, green assets, structures. The map is the central overview; attributes record condition, maintenance, owner, and lifecycle.

Organizations often link BGT/BRT topography, internal asset registers, and inspection data from field apps. Dashboards show maintenance backlogs; analyses support prioritization and investment planning.

Asset management is not the same as general GIS administration or pure financial management. The geographic component shows where assets lie and how they relate spatially to each other and the environment.
