Urban heat islands on the map

See where urban heat actually concentrates

Heat Insight maps heat-sensitive neighbourhoods, shade, green and cooler places so Dutch municipalities can prioritise cooling and greening — without unsourced death counts or a healthcare-cost calculator.

Why map urban heat

Built-up areas heat up faster than the surrounding landscape. Paving, buildings and little green create urban heat islands. A city-wide average hides which neighbourhoods are most exposed — and where extra shade or green would help first.

  • Cooling

  • Neighbourhoods

How Heat Insight works

Policy officers see heat-sensitive areas together with distance to cooling, shade on walking routes and green per neighbourhood. That is the basis for choosing where trees, shade structures or water make the most difference — not a live weather station network.

Heat hotspots and cool places together

Bring heat islands, shade, green and cooler public space onto one map. Compare neighbourhoods, discuss measures with colleagues, and keep heat policy understandable for council and residents.

What urban heat islands mean in practice

Heat Insight does not replace a climate stress test or a national heat protocol. It makes the spatial pattern usable: where the city is most exposed, and where greening and shade can help.

Uneven exposure

Paved centres and compact neighbourhoods often stay warmer than greener edges. Policy needs that neighbourhood picture, not only a municipal slogan.

Cooling is local

Trees, parks, water and shade structures work in specific streets. The map helps you see where those measures land relative to heat.

Works with green and climate layers

Combine Heat Insight with Green Insight and the Climate Adaptation Monitor so cooling, greening and participation sit in one platform.

What you actually get

Maps and analysis for cooling and greening choices. Not real-time city thermometers, not automatic heat-stress reports, not a healthcare-cost model.

  • Heat-sensitive areas

See where urban heat islands show up relative to paving, building density and green.

    • Heat patterns on the map
    • Neighbourhood comparison
    • Trend between update moments
  • Cooling context

Green, water and shade as context for where extra cooling is most useful.

    • Distance to cooler places
    • Shade on routes
    • Green per neighbourhood
  • Prioritise measures

Use the map in planning talks: which streets or squares first, and why.

    • Spatial evidence for choices
    • Link to greening plans
    • Export for GIS and reports
  • One platform

Heat sits next to urban green, climate adaptation and solar so you do not keep a separate heat viewer.

Gemeente Hengelo

Frequently asked questions

Answers about Heat Insight.

The Climate Adaptation Monitor is for engagement and tracking of adaptation initiatives (heat, drought, water together). Heat Insight goes deeper on the spatial heat pattern: heat-sensitive areas, shade, green and cooler places. Use it when cooling and greening need a neighbourhood map, not only a project list.

No. We work with periodic spatial data so you get a stable picture for planning. Acute heat alerts belong with weather services; we can advise if you want those connected separately.

We map existing green, water, shade and paving as context. The map supports discussion of extra greening or shade; it does not automatically score every possible measure or produce a cost-benefit table.

Yes. Export and integration with common GIS formats are available, including use inside ESG Maps alongside other sustainability layers.
