3-30-300 & urban green

Urban green mapped

Monitor urban greening according to the scientifically grounded 3-30-300 rule. From biodiversity to liveability: everything in one complete overview.

  • 3-30-300 compliance
  • Canopy & green reach
  • Liveability

Why urban green is crucial

The 3-30-300 rule is scientifically grounded: green contributes to health, biodiversity and liveability. Urban greening is essential for future-proof cities. Monitor greening and steer towards concrete goals.

How Green Insight works

Policy officers and ecologists see how much green there is per neighbourhood and how it relates to the 3-30-300 rule. Analyse greening opportunities and test plans.

Green space and liveability per neighbourhood

Make trees, parks, paved surfaces and the 3-30-300 rule visible per neighbourhood. This shows where greening has the most impact.

β€œThe 3-30-300 rule is the first evidence-based standard for urban greening worldwide.”
UBC researchers, 2022

The 3-30-300 rule: scientifically grounded

Developed by researchers at the University of British Columbia: how green contributes to health, biodiversity and liveability in cities.

3 visible trees

From every point in the living environment at least 3 trees should be visible. This supports mental health and stress reduction.

30% canopy

In every neighbourhood at least 30% of the surface should be canopy. This provides cooling, air purification and biodiversity.

300 metres distance

Every home should be within 300 metres of a park or green space. This guarantees access to recreation and nature.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about Green Insight.

What exactly is the 3-30-300 rule?
The rule stands for: at least 3 trees visible from every home, 30% canopy in every neighbourhood, and within 300 metres a park or green spot. It is a scientifically grounded guideline for urban greening. Green Insight shows per neighbourhood and district how you score on these three norms.
How often is green and canopy data updated?
Canopy and green cover are updated annually based on current satellite and aerial imagery. That lets you follow trends and monitor the effect of greening measures.
Can Green Insight help with subsidy applications for greening?
Yes. The 3-30-300 analyses and maps support policy plans and subsidy applications. Many municipalities use the reports for programmes such as the Green Revolution or provincial greening subsidies.
Can I connect Green Insight to my GIS or other systems?
Yes. We offer API access and export to common formats (including GeoJSON, WMS). Connections with ArcGIS, QGIS and municipal portals are possible.
