Heat stress & cooling mapped

Combating urban heat islands

Identify heat-sensitive areas and develop effective cooling measures. Protect residents against the health risks of urban heat stress with data-driven insights.

  • Heat island analysis
  • Cooling effect measurement
  • Health impact

Why cooling planning is crucial

Urban heat islands threaten residents' health, especially older people and those with chronic conditions. Urban heat stress is not only uncomfortable but life-threatening. Insight into cooling, shade and green helps take effective measures.

How Heat Insight works

Policy officers analyse heat stress with maps for distance to cooling, shade on walking routes and green per neighbourhood. See where measures have the greatest effect.

Heat hotspots and cool places mapped

Bring heat islands, shade, vulnerable groups and cool places together. Prioritise measures and make heat policy understandable.

Urban heat stress: an urgent challenge

Cities are getting warmer due to climate change and urbanisation. Heat islands threaten residents' health, especially older people and those with chronic conditions.

Health risks

Heat islands cause health issues such as heat stroke, dehydration and worsening of chronic diseases.

Urbanisation

Concrete surfaces absorb and retain heat, making urban areas warmer than surrounding nature.

Climate change

More extreme weather makes heat waves more frequent and intense, with greater health risks.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about Heat Insight.

What is the difference between Heat Insight and the Climate Adaptation Monitor?
The Climate Adaptation Monitor combines several risks (heat, drought, water). Heat Insight goes deeper on heat: heat islands, vulnerable groups, cool spots and the effect of measures. Ideal when heat is a priority in your municipality and you want to underpin targeted cooling and greening strategies.
Which heat measures are included in the maps?
We map existing green, water, shade and paving and model the effect of extra greening, water and shade. That shows where interventions have the greatest effect on temperature and perception.
Is the heat data real-time or periodic?
We work with periodic updates (including satellite and weather data) for stable maps and trends. For acute heat alerts you can additionally connect to live weather services; we are happy to advise on that integration.
Can Heat Insight connect to our GIS or reports?
Yes. API and export to GeoJSON, WMS and common GIS formats are available. Integration with ArcGIS, QGIS and municipal climate systems is possible.
