How participation can contribute to traffic research

7 October 2019

Traditional traffic research is mainly based on technical measurements and models. But citizens often have valuable local knowledge about traffic situations that is not always visible in data.

By involving citizens in traffic research, these local insights can be utilized. People often know exactly where dangerous situations are, where traffic problems occur and what the causes are.

Participation platforms like MapTalk make it possible to collect this local knowledge in a structured way. Citizens can indicate on maps where problems are, what the problem is and optionally upload photos.

The combination of technical data and local knowledge leads to more complete and better traffic research. This results in plans that are not only technically good but also align with the reality of use.
