Feasibility studies and participation: essential insights for successful plan development

7 May 2019

Feasibility studies are an important part of project development. They investigate whether a project is technically, financially and socially feasible. Traditionally, these studies are mainly conducted by professionals, but participation can enrich them.
By involving citizens and stakeholders in feasibility studies, important aspects can be incorporated that would otherwise be overlooked. Local knowledge about, for example, land use, traffic patterns or social dynamics can be crucial for a project's feasibility.
Participation platforms make it possible to collect and analyze this local knowledge in a structured way. This leads to more complete feasibility studies that look not only at technical and financial aspects but also at social and societal feasibility.
Involving stakeholders in feasibility studies not only leads to better studies but also to more support for projects. When people are involved from the start, they are more likely to support the project.
