he online map application MapTalk is the ideal digital participation tool to involve citizens in spatial projects. Enabling residents to actively contribute ideas when planning new bicycle routes, that’s exactly what Cleantech Regio wanted to achieve in the Vlot en Veilig fietsen project. In the MapTalk application, developed by MapGear, residents can now share their opinions on the plans for new and fast bicycle routes from home.
People can literally view project designs from their couch and submit feedback.
Two community evenings were also organized. At digital map tables, attendees could see exactly where the bike routes were planned and what this would mean for their neighborhoods. Reactions or suggestions could be entered and saved directly on the map. Moreover, users could zoom in down to the address level, providing great insight and a complete picture.
The MapTalk application has been enthusiastically used, both during the community evenings and at home by those who could not attend. Thanks to its user-friendliness, everyone can get started immediately. Nearly 200 responses have already been received via MapTalk, many of them offering useful tips to optimize the bicycle routes.
